COURSE DESCRIPTION:

We commence our new academic year by exploring Surah Yusuf. The twelfth chapter of the Quran, consisting of 111 verses, is broadly recognised by scholars as a Makkan revelation, delivered during a time of profound grief and adversity for the Prophet Muhammad.

We shall explore the themes and central arguments articulated in the surah, including the Supreme Sovereignty and Subtle Design (Latif) of God, His absolute decree, and the importance of steadfast reliance on Him.

The Surah delineates the Quran not merely as a compilation of stories but as the most exemplary of narratives (Ahsan al-Qasas), crafted to provide profound guidance and elucidation in moral, social, and political spheres. It underscores the importance of upholding integrity amid temptation, highlights the triumph of truth over falsehood, and distinguishes between those who act steadfastly and those driven by envy, treachery, and shortsighted desires. Furthermore, it warns believers against despair, a trait that erodes faith during extended tests of endurance.

It reminds them that worldly authority is transient and that plotting against divine destiny is futile. To achieve true spiritual success, it emphasises the importance of remaining steadfast (Sabr Jameel) and persistent in virtue when enduring unjust suffering and hardship inflicted by others.

The Surah concludes by encouraging believers to derive insight from historical accounts, affirming that individuals who exhibit God-consciousness and steadfastness will ultimately attain divine elevation and success. It reminds us that ultimate grace and favour are solely within Allah’s sovereignty, as He elevates whom He wills.
